Micro+ Smokerlyzer analyzer for the determination of carbon monoxide in exhaled air

Bedfont Scientific Ltd - UK
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic, colorless and odorless gas known as the "silent killer". It is formed from the incomplete combustion of fuels and can be found in car tailpipe emissions, in cigarette smoke and in the case of faults in gas-fired power plants. CO is quickly absorbed into the blood through the lungs and prevents normal oxygen transport, having harmful effects on the heart, circulation, breathing and even pregnancy. Monitoring CO levels is important for assessing smoking addiction and identifying risks associated with exposure to this toxic gas. Devices such as the Smokerlyzer® are used to measure the CO content of exhaled air, providing vital information for treating tobacco addiction and preventing smoking-related health problems.

What is carbon monoxide (CO)?

Carbon monoxide (CO), also known as the silent killer, is a colorless, odorless, highly toxic gas that is produced when fuels are incompletely burned. It is produced by car exhaust pipes, faulty gas boilers and cigarette smoke8.

Oxygen is carried around the body by red blood cells, and when you inhale smoke from a cigarette, CO is absorbed into the blood through the lungs because hemoglobin binds with CO 200 times faster than with oxygen9.

CO binds with hemoglobin in red blood cells, resulting in carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), and thus oxygen transport by red cells is prevented9.

A heavy smoker can have up to 15% of their blood cells occupied by CO, depriving the body of oxygen14.

What does CO do to your body?

Hearts: To make up for the lack of oxygen, the heart has to work harder (beat faster) to get enough oxygen to all parts of the body. The heart itself receives less oxygen, increasing the risk of heart disease10.

Circulation: COHb causes the blood to thicken and the arteries become coated with a thick, fatty substance. This leads to circulation problems and high blood pressure, increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Hands and feet may also become colder as less blood circulates to the extremities11.

Breathing: When the amount of oxygen you receive is reduced you can easily experience shortness of breath during exercise because there is less oxygen available to meet the increased demand. Also, lack of oxygen can cause fatigue and lack of concentration1.

Tasks: Oxygen is necessary for healthy fetal growth, but when the mother smokes vital oxygen is reduced. This increases the risk of low birth weight, congenital malformations and even Sudden Death Syndrome. A recent clinical study established a direct link between the CO level in a pregnant mother's breath and the amount of COHb in her unborn child's blood2.

Why monitor CO?

CO testing is a rapid, non-invasive and cost-effective means of confirming smoking status for a significant number of customers3.

Smoking is the biggest and only preventable risk factor for cancer. Tobacco smoking causes up to 27% of all cancer deaths in England4 and is responsible for around 80% of deaths from lung cancer, around 80% of deaths from bronchitis and emphysema, and around 14% of deaths from heart disease12, 13.

Carbon monoxide monitoring provides tobacco addiction treatment professionals with an independent clinical tool that provides valuable information for the identification, education, assessment, and treatment of smoking-dependent patients6.

Monitoring patients' CO levels helps determine level of nicotine addiction; the more they smoke, the higher the result will be, indicating greater nicotine addiction.

What is Smokerlyzer®?

Smokerlyzer analyzers are a series of breath CO monitors that measure the amount of CO in exhaled air. The more you smoke, the higher your CO reading will be.

The result is displayed in ppm, representing the number of CO molecules in one million parts of air. The ppm result can also tell you how much CO is in your blood (the COHb result). %COHb represents the percentage of red cells carrying CO instead of oxygen.

The amount of CO in the blood of an unborn baby is represented by %fCOHb (percent fetal COHb). Part of the Smokerlyzer® range can analyze %fCOHb (percentage of fetal COHb) as an incentive for mothers-to-be to quit smoking and adhere to NICE guidance on smoking during pregnancy.
